Hodgson eyeing Premier League top 10 rather than relegation scrap

By Sports Desk February 09, 2019

Roy Hodgson felt Crystal Palace deserved more than a 1-1 draw against West Ham and has his sights on the Premier League's top 10 rather than a relegation scrap.

Wilfried Zaha scored a late, deflected equaliser on his return from suspension at Selhurst Park, cancelling out Mark Noble's first-half penalty for the visitors.

Palace racked up 25 attempts on goal to West Ham's six, with 17 of those efforts coming in a second period they dominated.

But despite Palace's lack of a finishing touch and the fact they only sit three points clear of the drop zone, Hodgson is looking up the table.

"There are a lot of games still to play and if we continue to play as we have been doing, I can't see us having enormous difficulties," Palace boss Hodgson said at his post-match media conference.

"I continue to hope that these performances will lead us into the top half of the table."

Asked if he does not consider Palace to be part of the relegation battle, Hodgson said: "What exactly do you mean? How many points above the relegation zone do you have to be not to be involved in a relegation battle?

"My perception is that I've got a very good football team. They've shown it time and time again this season. They showed it against a team that should have beaten Liverpool on Monday night and certainly we should have beaten them.

"So I think personally that I'm entitled to believe in this team and to be less concerned about teams below them than the teams above and catching those teams up. So many points we gave away previously were not through bad performances.

"I suppose I am differentiating between performances and points because we don't have as many points as our performances perhaps deserve. You will have to allow me to either look upwards rather than downwards as that's my prerogative.

"I am frustrated as it was such a good performance, the first half was an even game, but in the second half it was pretty much one-way traffic. We found Lukasz Fabianski in very good form.

"Our aim is to still get higher and we must not get too caught up in the relegation battle. We know we are good enough to stay out of it."

Even though West Ham are now without a win in five matches across all competitions, manager Manuel Pellegrini was happy enough with the result.

"I'm happy with the first 45 minutes when we had a brilliant performance and not too happy with the second 45," he said.

"They scored a very lucky goal because it was a deflection, but they dominated the game in the second 45 minutes. It was a good game and that was the fair result. We have a lot of players missing and we were playing away, I think it's a good point."

  • Valverde has high expectations for €224m trio De Jong, Griezmann and Neto at Barcelona Valverde has high expectations for €224m trio De Jong, Griezmann and Neto at Barcelona

Ernesto Valverde is expecting a swift impact from €224million trio Antoine Griezmann, Frenkie de Jong and Neto at Barcelona.

France star Griezmann became the LaLiga champions' third major signing of the close-season last Friday, after Barca paid his €120m release clause at Atletico Madrid.

De Jong had agreed to a move to Camp Nou in January for an initial fee of €75m, having been courted by a number of Europe's top sides due to some standout displays for Champions League semi-finalists Ajax.

Goalkeeper Neto was signed in June for €29m, with a further €9m to be paid in add-ons, as Jasper Cillessen went the other way to Valencia for €35m in total.

Such an expensive outlay has led to big expectations for Griezmann and De Jong in particular, and Barca boss Valverde hopes to see them hit the ground running.

"They are three important signings," he told Barca TV. "Of course, we expect a lot out of them, they have our fans excited and what we want them to do is get into the team dynamic and perform to their levels.

"[De Jong] has last year and in recent years been playing at a high level, as did his whole team. We hope he can give us some fresh energy in midfield, which can only be good for us. We're building for the future and he has years ahead of him. He's a quality player. He has a little bit of our playing style in him.

"[Griezmann] is a player who fills spaces quickly and is decisive near goal and we know how much a player like that is worth and what he gives you in return. We have high hopes for him because he is young but with experience and that leads us to expect him to perform right away.

"Neto is an experienced player too, an insurance policy in goal, and we think he is an ideal complement to Marc-Andre ter Stegen."

Valverde accepts the pressure is on Barca to challenge on all fronts once more, with last term's league title win overshadowed by a Copa del Rey final loss to Valencia and a humiliating Champions League semi-final exit to Liverpool.

"We have challenges, just like any other year, and we also have the demand of having to win everything, to win all the time, to get our fans excited," he said.

"There is nothing else for Barca except trying to win every competition we take part in, to win all our games and stay faithful to our style."

  • Galatasaray in talks to sign Fulham flop Seri on loan Galatasaray in talks to sign Fulham flop Seri on loan

Galatasaray are in talks to sign Fulham flop Jean Michael Seri on loan.

The Super Lig champions confirmed via a brief Twitter statement on Wednesday that negotiations are underway.

Seri signed for Fulham from Nice last year for a reported fee of £25million - a club record at the time - after having previously been linked with Barcelona.

He made 32 appearances in the Premier League last term but was unable to impress consistently as the Cottagers suffered relegation to the Championship.

AC Milan have also been credited with an interest in the midfielder, who turns 28 on Friday.

His former Fulham team-mate, Ryan Babel, signed for Gala on a free transfer last month after leaving the London club.

  • De Bruyne willing to take Man City captaincy De Bruyne willing to take Man City captaincy

Kevin De Bruyne will "gladly" accept the Manchester City captaincy should his team-mates choose him as the player to take over from the departed Vincent Kompany.

City are without a club captain since Kompany left for Anderlecht at the end of last season and they are yet to confirm who will fulfil the role next term.

De Bruyne came on as a substitute in City's first pre-season friendly on Wednesday, setting up the final goal in a 4-1 rout of West Ham, who they face in their opening Premier League fixture.

Pep Guardiola confirmed after the match in China that City's squad will pick the next captain when all of the players have returned to pre-season training.

And De Bruyne says he would be more than willing to take on the challenge.

"If the team wants me to be captain, I will gladly accept it," De Bruyne told reporters.

"But, I think everyone needs to talk about it as a team and as a club. It will be spoken about when everyone comes back.

"I think we need to do that together because it's a really important job, not only on the pitch, but off it."

As well as new club-record signing Rodri, City academy graduates Tommy Doyle and Taylor Harwood-Bellis were handed their first appearances in Nanjing, and in an example of his leadership qualities, De Bruyne lauded the youngsters for their performances.

"If you play for one of the best clubs players in the world, to be a youth player and get through [to the first team] you have to be exceptional," he said.

"I started in Belgium, the level is not the same as it is here [in England]. It's maybe easier to get more chances. If you want to play for us, you know what the level is and if you perform on the pitch you will get the chance.

"I think they did really well and I'm happy to see that. A great moment for many of them to start for the first time for a club like us."

City's pre-season tour continues on Saturday when they take on Wolves in the final of the Premier League Asia Trophy.
