Find the fun in football - SSFL ambassador Hislop encourages players to love game

By Sports Desk March 05, 2019
Shaka Hislop. Shaka Hislop.

Trinidad and Tobago Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) ambassador Shaka Hislop has encouraged athletes to first and foremost enjoy the sport of football.

The 50-year-old former national player turned television pundit, is himself a former alumnus of the SSFL where he competed for St Mary’s College.  The former Newcastle goalkeeper has been brought on board this year to serve as an inspirational source and lodestar for players taking part in this year’s competition.

“That’s what I would continue to encourage everybody who plays, play because you enjoy it and you’ll see where your talent takes you. Don’t focus on what one person is doing because that’s an entirely different story, they have their own unique path,” Hislop told the T&T Newsday.

With several young players focused on Europe, Hislop also advised youngsters to look further home where the North American league could be a viable option.

“It continues to be a viable alternative.  You can also come through the secondary school level (in TT) to get into college football. I played because I enjoyed the game. I didn’t think I would have ever played professional, that came as I grew and developed.”

Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division challengers, St Anthony’s College and Presentation College both took advantage of idle leaders and defending champions Naparima College with wins in Saturday’s round of games.

Getting into the business end of the tournament, the defending champions will have to keep winning now, as St Anthony’s College are three points adrift of the leaders, while last season’s runners up, Presentation College are four points away, having played one less game.

The difference between the teams if everybody keeps winning is just one point. Presentation kept things close by virtue of a 1-0 win over Trinity College East, while St Anthony’s kept up the pressure by dominating relegation-troubled Malick Secondary 4-1.

At the other end of the table, St Mary’s College continue to find this season more than a little challenging, remaining rooted to the foot on four points after a 5-0 loss to Carapichaima East Secondary.

In other games on Saturday, Pleasantville Secondary were 3-1 winners over Speyside, East Mucurapo College beat Trinity College Moka 5-2, while Queen’s Royal College clipped St Benedict’s College 1-0.

San Juan North Secondary continued to do good work toward the top of the table, with a 3-1 win over St Augustine Secondary, leaving them lying seventh.

  • Naps strengthens title-defence campaign as Presentation slips Naps strengthens title-defence campaign as Presentation slips

Naparima College, with three games to go in their Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division title defence campaign have tightened their grip at the top of the table after Wednesday’s round of games.

Beginning the day with a four-point lead over Presentation College, Naparima did themselves a big favour with the 5-0 thrashing of Carapichaima East Secondary on Wednesday.

The result pushed Naps to 29 points from 11 games, six ahead of St Anthony’s College, who were comfortable 2-0 winners over Pleasantville Secondary.

That result helped St Anthony’s jump from third to second and may have put Presentation under pressure after their game against Queen’s Royal College was not played.

Presentation just needs to win their remaining games to keep pressure on Naps and to stave off St Anthony’s, who, while a point ahead, have a game in hand and could perceivably regain their second-place position. Without a mistake from the leaders, Presentation can finish at best, one point off the leaders.

Carapichaima are still fourth despite the heavy defeat with their 19 points, giving them one point more than fifth place East Mucurapo, who were clipped 1-0 by Trinity College East.

In other games played on Wednesday, San Juan North Secondary were 4-2 winners over Malick Secondary and Trinity College Moka were slammed 4-nil by St Benedict’s College.

  • Naparima-St Anthony’s thriller puts defending champions more at ease ahead of round 10 Naparima-St Anthony’s thriller puts defending champions more at ease ahead of round 10

Naparima College will go into today’s round of Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division games breathing a little easier after they dispatched main rivals St Anthony’s College on Wednesday at Lewis Street.

Naparima College, starting the day three points ahead of St Anthony’s could have been in trouble at the top of the table but an enthralling 3-2 win for the defending champions meant they go into Saturday’s games with a bit of a buffer.

The defending champions can’t rest on their laurels for too long though, as Presentation College, last year’s runners up have remained steady, earning a 3-1 win over St Augustine which keeps them in touch with Naparima.

Presentation have now taken over second place from St Anthony’s, just four points adrift of the leaders and two points ahead of the team they leapfrogged.

St Anthony’s are now fourth on 17 points while Carpichaima East Secondary are the new third-placed team, after a 4-2 away win over Speyside on Wednesday.

In other games on Wednesday, Queen’s Royal College were big 4-1 winners over Trinity College East, while Malick Secondary abated the bleeding with a 1-1 draw against St Benedict’s High School. They still have not won a game in five rounds, however.

St Mary’s College have not found a way to slow their slide though, as San Juan North Secondary handed them their hats in a 7-0 affair, while East Mucurapo Secondary are continuing to have a solid season, beating Pleasantville Secondary 3-0 to remain in fifth place on the tables.

Today Malick Secondary take on East Mucurapo Secondary at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Speyside are at home to Naparima College, Presentation College go to Pleasantville, Carpichaima East host San Juan, St Mary’s College do the same against St Anthony’s College, while St Benedict’s visits St Augustine.
In the only other game of the round, Queen’s Royal College play host to Trinity College Moka, while Trinity College East are the team on a bye.
