CIC rediscover winning formula, defending champs stay perfect

By September 30, 2018

St Mary’s College (CIC), after five games in the Secondary Schools Football League Premiership Division have finally found a way to win.

Playing away at Fatima College, the CIC earned a 4-2 victory that for periods of time looked in the balance, grabbing goals in the 18th and 50th minutes through Devon Charles, in the 45th+1 from Michel Poon-Angeron, and in the 53rd through Kyle Carrington.

Fatima’s answers came from the Jean-Heim McFee in the 20th and 56th minutes of play.

CIC started the brighter of the two teams but there was very little goalmouth action as both teams struggled to keep possession of the ball.

In the 18th minute Charles would benefit from a rebound that came from a parried shot on goal, giving the speedy winger the simplest of tap ins.

Fatima were always dangerous though, and answered right away when McFee showed great composure to tuck away a one on one chance with the goalkeeper.

Fatima were on level terms on the scoresheet and may have been shading the balance of play until Poon-Angeron picked up a ball in midfield, played a lovely diagonal pass out wide to Charles and drove into the box. Charles’ cross was a good one and Poon-Angeron met it well smacking it in the same direction the cross had come from to wrong-foot the goalkeeper, who in fairness, probably could not have saved it in any case.

At 2-1 one down, Fatima looked to be getting back into the game, yet again and were in the ascendency when a shot struck the arm of one of their defenders.

Charles slot the resulting penalty calmly down the middle of the goal to give CIC a more comfortable lead.

At that point, Fatima looked dead in the water and when an attempted cross from the right side hit the crossbar and rebounded to Carrington, who finished at the far post, the game looked out of sight.

But nobody told McFee that and he scored the goal of the game to make things close, picking up a pass outside of the penalty area and driving a low-hard shot past a helpless goalkeeper.

The loss has left Fatima in 14th place and worried over the possibility of relegation.

According to Fatima coach Wayne Sheppard, while there may be a relegation scrap on the horizon for Fatima, his team deserves to play at this level but needs to show that on the field.

CIC’s coach Ryan Shim, on the other hand, believes he has already found the formula that will allow for more successes this season.

Shim explained that his CIC simply went back to what they were doing last season when they managed to finish in the top six and were always dangerous, turning spoiler for a number of teams with title hopes.

CIC are now 10th on the table with four points after the win.

At the other end of the table, Defending champions Presentation College stayed two points clear at the top thanks to a 1-0 win over east Mucurapo Secondary at the St Anthony’s school grounds.

Naparima College, in the meantime, kept pressure on the leaders with a 3-1 victory at At Augustine Secondary.

In other games, Carapichaima east Secondary came from behind to beat promoted side Valencia Secondary 3-2 at the Valencia home field, while the Queen’s Royal College made life difficult for another promoted team, Bishop’s High at home.

QRC ended 4-1 winners in that game, while there were two draws in the round’s other games.

Trinity College Moka could not find a way past the visiting San Juan North Secondary, each team getting onto the scoresheet once.

The other draw happened in Trincity where Trinity College East played host to St Anthony’s College. There were no goals in that game.
