Former Windies bat critical of Hope, Russell

By August 16, 2018

Several Windies players including Shai Hope and Andre Russell have come in for scathing criticism former Windies batsman Bryan Davis following the Windies losses to Bangladesh in their recent ODI and T20 series.

The Caribbean side won the two-Test series handily but was less than impressive in the subsequent ODI and T20 series which they lost 2-1, respectively.

Davis, who played four Tests for the Windies in the 1960s, expressed his disappointment with the losses but singled out some players to denigrate.

“The thing about Shai Hope is I don’t believe in picking a batsman to stand up behind the stumps,” Davis said in an interview with the Newsday publication in Trinidad and Tobago.

“He was very bad behind the stumps. Can you explain to me or give me a reason why (Shane) Dowrich couldn’t play?”

He wasn’t done. Jamaica and Windies all-rounder Andre Russell was also in his sights.

“Russell is an ordinary bowler and international cricket is a little too high for him there,” Davis said.

He’s a game-changer when it comes to his batting, but he’s not consistent. He has to bat at number seven and he can’t be one of your main five bowlers.”

He was less critical of Shimron Hetmeyer, whom he described as one of his favourites.

“I think he’s a fine cricketer. I was happy about his performances,” Davis said.

However, he didn’t offer much hope for the team heading into next year’s ICC World Cup, suggesting that there was not much talent available.

“You have to have at least 15 players sharp and ready to play, confident and encouraged by then,” said Davis. “I don’t know where they will get them from because I don’t see anybody around.”
