Windies batting star Chris Gayle has declared himself to be in great shape following an astounding 67 off 33 balls in a four-run win for Kings XI Punjab over Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday.

The 38-year-old, who was playing his first game of the season after initially being assigned to the Kings XI reserves, blasted seven fours and four sixes in racing to his half-century off 22 balls.  The total was the second fastest to the half-century mark in his IPL career.

“I got a text this morning that I would be playing. I am very happy that I have got off to a winning start for this new franchise. That’s Chris Gayle for you – hitting just fours and sixes and not worrying about ones and twos. Rahul took pressure off me at times as well. I am feeling like 25, the Universe Boss is back,” Gayle said following the match.

The big left-hander was released by Royal Challengers Bangalore at the start of this season after concerns arose regarding his ability to still perform at the very top level.  The performance, which anchored a big 197 for 7 for the Kings XI will have gone a long way to answering his critics.  In response, Chennai captain MS Dhoni scored 79 runs off 45 deliveries but the team ended short on 193 for 5.
