Mathews, Gamage out for rest of Windies series

Angelo Mathews. Angelo Mathews.

Sri Lanka will be without the services of former captain Angelo Mathews for the rest of the tour against the West Indies after returning home for personal reasons.

The 31-year-old Mathews only just returned to Test following five months on the sideline due to recurring hamstring and calf injuries.  In the series so far, which ended with a lopsided win for the Windies in the first Test Mathews made 11 and 31.

The player’s withdrawal is not the only bad news for Sri Lanka as bowler Lahiru Gamage was also ruled out with a broken finger.  Gamage suffered the injury after being hit by a delivery from pacer Shannon Gabriel.

Batsman Dasun Shanaka, who last played a Test against Bangladesh in February, and all-rounder Danushka Gunathilaka were expected to arrive as replacements for the missing duo on Wednesday - but it is unlikely the duo will be available for the start of the St Lucia Test.
