Coach Mills, pastor, helped Yohan Blake rediscover confidence

By February 14, 2019

They may have parted ways but Yohan Blake credits his former coach Glen Mills for helping him regain his confidence, which he admits, had deserted him in recent times as he attempts to recapture the form that made him the second fastest man ever to walk the earth.

Blake finished just outside the medals at the 2017 World Championships in London and the Olympic Games in 2016, a far cry from the man who beat Usain Bolt twice at the National Championships in Kingston in 2012.

“Being human, it took my confidence owing to the fact that you know that the person in the lane next to you cannot beat you and they are running leave you and you cannot do anything about it,” he said.

“It messed me up and I went back to the drawing board to see what I was doing wrong and I found what I had been doing wrong and what my body lacked.”

Conversations with his former coach with whom he had a reported acrimonious parting and his pastor also played a significant role in helping the born-again Christian rediscover his mojo.

“As crazy as it may seem, Coach Mills and also my pastor, we talked a bit but it all comes down to me. I spent some time in the hills and got my mind right. I know what I can do and I am doing it in training so I feel good,” he said.

“This year I believe in myself and things are going to be different.”
