Dacres wants to be 'deadly force' in 2019

By November 07, 2018

Coming off a season in which he won everything in sight, 2018 Diamond League discus champion Fedrick Dacres is confident of success in 2019 when he is expected to compete for Jamaica at the IAAF World Championships in Qatar.

It will be Dacres fourth major senior championships and the first where is favoured to win a medal given his success this past season. In 2018, Dacres won the Commonwealth Games title in a new championship record of 68.20m. He also won the Senior NACAC title, the Diamond League title, the first Jamaican to do so; and the season-ending Continental Cup.

The NACAC Senior Male Athlete of the Year also set a new personal best mark of 69.67m, a new national record.

With the season’s success behind him, he faces the future with greater assuredness.

“I am confident entering next year because I think I have matured enough in my sport to say I can be a very deadly force to be reckoned with next year,” he said.

However, Dacres does have obstacle to clear heading into next season. Mid-way through last season, he suffered a knee injury but managed to last the remainder of the season. He underwent surgery in early October but revealed that he has already begun to train.

“I am not as weak because I have started lifting so I am not as weak as I would have thought. My knee is coming on good,” he said.
