2017 World under 18 sprint hurdles champion Dejour Russell says he can’t wait to get a crack at the world’s best junior sprint hurdlers at this year’s IAAF World under 20 Championships in Finland in July.

Russell, who turned 18 in April, was an easy winner in Nairobi, Kenya in 2017, and declared that his weight is down and he is in the shape of his life. “My weight is good now. I am feeling super light, coach said I am looking in good form and I just can’t wait to go put everything out on the track.”

The towering hurdler was speaking with SportsMax.TV on Tuesday at the launch of the 2018 JAAA/SVL National Junior and Senior Championships at the Jamaica Pegasus in Kingston.

Russell is perhaps the most talented junior hurdler in the country and while he has to qualify at the championships set for June 21 to 24 to make the team, expressed confidence in his form this year.

“I’ve been feeling pretty good, this is the best I’ve ever felt, and I am thankful for that,” said Russell who was eighth in the final of the Commonwealth Games in Australia in April.

“I’m just going out there at the junior level to compete at the best of my ability and I just hope God continues guiding me.”

In Kenya last year, Russell was imperious winning in a championship record of 13.04s, breaking his own record of 13.08s he had set in the semi-finals. Silver medalist, Lu Hao-Hua of Chinese Taipei, was almost some distance behind in 13.41s while France’s Thomas Wanaverbecq took third in 13.55.

This time around Russell expects the competition to be fiercer.

“I am not underestimating anybody. I am just going out there to do my best.”
