The 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics will take place in Italy after Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo were announced as hosts.

The Milan-Cortina bid saw off the challenge of Stockholm-Are in a vote at an International Olympic Committee meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland on Monday.

Cortina staged the 1956 Games, while Italy last held the Winter Olympics in 2006, when Turin was the venue.

"Congratulations to Milan-Cortina. We can look forward to an outstanding and sustainable Olympic Winter Games in a traditional winter sports country," IOC President Thomas Bach said in a statement.

"The passion and knowledge of Italian fans, together with experienced venue operators, will create the perfect atmosphere for the best athletes in the world.

"The Olympic Winter Games Milan-Cortina 2026 will feature iconic venues and beautiful settings, combining the attractions of a modern European metropolis with a classic Alpine environment."

The vote count was 47-34 in favour of Milan-Cortina, with one abstention.

Several cities had previously dropped out of the running, even though the IOC relaxed rules over financial guarantees and government support for 2026.

"We have lowered the cost and complexity of developing Games projects, which now serve the long-term development goals of the host communities and have sustainability and legacy at their hearts," Bach added.

"This has led to a significantly reduced organisation budget and the use of 93 per cent existing or temporary competition venues."

Beijing in China will stage the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympics.

The Jamaica bobsled team's pilot has been banned in a doping case, but avoided disqualification from last year's Winter Olympics.

The International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation says it agreed with Jazmine Fenlator-Victorian to issue a one-year ban which was immediately canceled out by time she served on provisional suspension before the case was heard.

The IBSF says it accepted Fenlator-Victorian's explanation that a contaminated supplement caused her to test positive for clenbuterol in January 2018, the month before the Olympics in Pyeongchang.

It adds that "fairness requires" she shouldn't be disqualified from competitions between the positive test and her provisional suspension, which would include Jamaica's 18th place at the Olympics.

Fenlator-Victorian partnered Lolo Jones at the 2014 Olympics for the United States, finishing 11th.

The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) has chosen Salt Lake City to bid for the 2030 Winter Games.

Salt Lake City earned widespread praise for successfully hosting the 2002 Winter Games, making a return appearance seem almost inevitable.

After months of lobbying by city leaders, the USOC chose Salt Lake City over Denver and Reno, Nevada, to make the bid.

"We are truly humbled and honoured to be the USOC's choice to bid for a future Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games," Salt Lake City mayor Jackie Biskupski said in a statement.

"We take our role as a member of the Olympic family seriously and look forward to showing the international community how Salt Lake City is ready, willing, and able to host a modern, sustainable, and athlete focused Games which further the spirit of sport and the Olympic and Paralympic movements."

Also helping Salt Lake City's bid is the fact the necessary Olympic facilities are already in place, and have been upgraded in some cases.

A local audit showed those facilities only needed about $40million in upgrades to prepare for upcoming Games, and the state has already approved money to begin improvements. Contrast that with the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, where organisers spent more than $100m on the Olympic Stadium alone.

The International Olympic Committee is expected to announce the 2030 Winter Games site in 2023.

Lindsey Vonn insists she will not "lost any sleep" if she does not surpass Ingemar Stenmark's overall record of FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup victories before retirement.

Lindsey Vonn's illustrious career will end after the 2018-19 season.

The four-time Olympic alpine skier announced on Thursday that this upcoming season will be her last.

IOC president Thomas Bach has paid tribute to Olympic medal-winning figure skater Denis Ten who has died, reportedly as the result of a stabbing.

Shaun White says competing as a skateboarder in the 2020 Summer Games in Japan would be "the ultimate" after the three-time Olympic snowboard champion entered competitions to test if he can achieve his goal.
