Jamaica’s Wayne Pinnock won his country’s first medal at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland on Wednesday.

Pinnock won the bronze medal in the long jump with a leap of 7.90m to become the first ever Jamaican male to win a medal at this age group internationally.

He produced a strong series of jumps with efforts of 7.83m and 7.82m which were not enough to overcome the jumps of Cuba’s Maikel Y. Vidal whose 7.99m was good for the silver medal.

Vidal had several leaps over 7.90 but he was unable to break the hallowed eight-metre mark which was what was needed to defeat Yoki Ashioka of Japan whose only effort beyond eight metres was good enough to secure the gold medal.
