The dominant Jamaican was the favorite to claim the top spot on the podium and she did not disappoint.  James led wire to wire to claim the event in 52.35 with her teammate Derri-Ann Hill also managing to get on the podium with a time of 53.30.  The Dominica Republic’s Fiordaliza Cofil took the bronze medal.

The win was the first for James in the event at the senior level, but despite entering the race with the most pedigree the sprinter admits she was eager to avoid overconfidence.

 “I must say I’m happy. I feel good. I didn’t come out here today with a time in mind I just wanted to win.  I was very nervous, I know I am the best by time but I have learned never to underestimate the field,” James said after the race.

“I’m a very confident person so I would never doubt myself.  I just went out there to run and I won so I am happy.”
