Defending champions throw off Hydel jinx, KC, St Catherine stay perfect

By Loop News September 29, 2018

Fourteen-time champions Kingston College (KC) and St Catherine High stretched their perfect records to six on Match Day 14 of the 2018 ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup football competition on Saturday.

KC defeated Clan Carthy High 8-0 in their return-leg Group B fixture at the Stadium East field, while St Catherine High whipped the visiting Oberlin High 10-0 in their Group E game.

The results mean that KC and St Catherine High completed big victories over the two legs, KC had defeated Clan Carthy 5-0 when they met for the first time on September 15 at the Alpha Institute; while St Catherine High had beaten Oberlin High 12-0 in an away match, also on September 15.

With the victories, KC and St Catherine High strengthened their chances of advancing to the second round as group winners.

KC moved to maximum 18 points from six matches, while Mona remain three points behind in second place following a 6-0 victory at Ardenne High. Third-place Calabar High are also in the hunt for a second round spot after scoring a 1-0 home victory against Dunoon Technical High School.

St Catherine High also moved to maximum 18 points, a three-point lead over Excelsior High, who scored a 2-1 home victory over Penwood High.

Meanwhile, five-time defending champions Jamaica College (JC) outscored Hydel High 3-2 in their Group F top-of-the-table fixture at Caymanas.

The victory was achieved through goals from Javain Thompson in the 37th minute, Tajay Grant in the 54th and Norman Campbell in the 74th. Fakibi Farquarson (45th) and  substitute Jordane Cameron (81st) responded for Hydel.

JC moved to 16 points, three more than Hydel High after both school entered the day locked on 13.

JC had a slight advantage in the first half with most of the action taking place in Hydel's half of the pitch.

Hydel countered quickly, but were mostly ineffective in the attacking third.

JC almost made their territorial advantage count early in the half when Earon Elliott rose high in the six-yard box and got a clean header from a left-side corner, but it went straight to goalkeeper Shaquan Davis.

JC eventually took the lead through a well-orchestrated build up. It was Grant, however, who took apart the Hydel defence with a long pass from the centre circle down the right flank to Okeefe Cunningham whose control got rid of his marker.

Cunningham dribbled to the edge of the 18-yard box and with Hydel defenders struggling to get back, crossed low out of the reach of the goalkeeper for Thompson at the far post to tap into the unprotected section of the goal.

Hydel would equalise from a free kick on the left side of the 18-yard box that Farquarson fired powerfully home.

Hydel started the second half pressing but it was JC who took the lead for a second time, when Grant scored from a scramble inside the area.

Shayne Lopez presented Campbell with an excellent opportunity to extend JC's lead but he missed the target.

The combination would get it right minutes later when Campbell scored a low volley after Lopez had once again dismissed his attackers on the right and crossed inside to him.

Hydel would not go away though as Cameron, who had come on as a substitute, scored the goal of the match, turning to bend his shot into the top left hand corner of the post from just outside the 18-yard box. It gave the JC goalkeeper no chance.

  • Ashley Williams joins Bristol City on short-term deal Ashley Williams joins Bristol City on short-term deal

Former Everton defender Ashley Williams has joined Bristol City on a short-term deal.

Williams, who was left out of the Wales squad this week, had been without a club since being released by Everton at the end of last season.

Bristol City have the option to extend the deal if the centre-back impresses at Ashton Gate before January.

"I'd like to offer Ashley a very warm welcome," head coach Lee Johnson told the club's website. "His experience will be invaluable, both on and off the pitch, and we're all looking forward to getting to work with him."

Williams, who turned 35 on Friday, could be in the squad for Saturday's Championship game against Hull City, although he admits he is unlikely to be fully fit until next month.

"I need a bit of work after missing pre-season," he said. "I haven't played since the internationals [in June], but we've got a plan and I'll be working on that over the next couple of weeks.

"There's a good set of players, nice guys first and foremost with a very organised manager who sets the weeks up brilliantly."

  • Icardi given no.7 shirt as Inter stay looks likely Icardi given no.7 shirt as Inter stay looks likely

Mauro Icardi has been given the number seven shirt for Inter this season as it grows increasingly likely he will stay at the club.

The Argentina international saw his number nine jersey given to new signing Romelu Lukaku as talks over a transfer away from San Siro continued.

However, with an exit beginning to look unlikely, the striker has been given a new squad number for the 2019-20 Serie A season, which starts this weekend.

Icardi was told to look for a new club by chief executive Giuseppe Marotta in July and was excluded from the club's pre-season tour of Asia.

The 26-year-old, who was stripped of the club captaincy last season, was tipped to move to Juventus in a part-exchange deal involving Paulo Dybala, but no such agreement has been reached.

Most recently, he was linked with Ligue 1 side Monaco, only for wife and agent Wanda Nara to rule out such a transfer.

Nara seemed to hint at Icardi staying at Inter with a tweet on Friday showing her photographed with other wives and girlfriends of Nerazzurri players, captioned 'another year together'.

  • Ribery could make Fiorentina debut against Napoli - Montella Ribery could make Fiorentina debut against Napoli - Montella

Franck Ribery could make his Fiorentina debut against Napoli when the Serie A season gets up and running this weekend, says Vincenzo Montella.

Ribery joined La Viola as a free agent on a two-year deal this week having left Bayern Munich at the end of his contract.

The former France international suggested in his presentation he would not be ready to play this weekend, and certainly is not fit to start.

But Montella is keen on using the 36-year-old for Saturday's season opener at Stadio Artemio Franchi.

"I want him to be with us because he wants to be a part of the game," Montella told a news conference. "I want him to be with us and I hope for a chance for him to play.

"He joined us because he wants to be still on the first line. He has to be competitive, I know he says he wants to, he works on it and I realised by myself in these first days of training.

"He doesn't pull himself out during the sessions. He knows he can get results only through hard work. I am sure he will transmit this mentality to all the squad.

"But I need to focus on the game. Dreams are great, but we need to keep our feet on the ground in this moment."

Ribery was given a rousing reception at his official presentation on Thursday, with thousands of Fiorentina fans attending to welcome him to the club.
