Sevilla, Valencia and Villarreal demand apology from RFEF president over 'gross disrespect'

By Sports Desk October 11, 2022

LaLiga trio Sevilla, Valencia and Villarreal have united to demand an apology from Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales.

The clubs believe Rubiales showed them "gross disrespect" in private comments, which were reported by Spanish publication El Confidencial.

Rubiales appeared to disparage the trio as his least favourite sides in the Spanish top flight in a conversation with his father.

These comments included Rubiales seemingly expressing his hope for a Sevilla loss to Real Madrid in a 2020 match, and a message where he ranked the three clubs bottom of his preferences.

Sevilla's 2-1 defeat to Madrid in the aforementioned game saw a Luuk de Jong goal disallowed, with Rubiales commenting: "They will be on my back about VAR."

He had previously written: "Let's see if we can wipe the floor with them, they are the teams I like least bar one out of all of them."

In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, the clubs called for a swift apology from Rubiales, who spent time at Valencia as a youngster between 1993 and 1995.

"Sevilla FC, Valencia CF and Villarreal CF come together to condemn the gross disrespect shown by the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales," the statement read.

"The conversations, in which he speaks with such contempt, animosity and arrogance towards the three clubs, are unacceptable coming from a person who holds a position of such responsibility and who must safeguard the interests of all the clubs in Spanish football equally.

"Sevilla FC, Valencia CF and Villarreal CF condemn Luis Rubiales' contempt and lack of respect towards the three institutions and, even more importantly, towards their fans.

"We also express the utmost concern for the possible consequences that his attitude could have for the clubs, as his behaviour is not conducive to transparency within the competition.

"Sevilla FC, Valencia CF and Villarreal CF urge Luis Rubiales to put things right and publicly apologise to the three clubs and their fans."

Steven Bergwijn's last-gasp winner earned Al-Ittihad a huge victory in their quest for the Saudi Pro League title, beating Al-Nassr 2-1 at King Abdullah Sports City on Friday.

Karim Benzema had given the hosts a 55th-minute lead before Cristiano Ronaldo levelled two minutes later, but Bergwijn struck the decisive blow in second half stoppage time.

In a tepid opening 45 minutes, clear-cut chances were hard to come by, with Bergwijn and Benzema going closest for the hosts, but unable to trouble Bento.

However, Al-Ittihad got themselves in front shortly after the break when Muhannad Al Shanqiti picked out Benzema, with the Frenchman on hand to tuck the ball home.

But the hosts' joy was short-lived after Angelo saw his effort cleared off the line by Danilo Pereira, before the Brazilian laid the ball back to Ronaldo to level the scoring.

With the game looking to end all square, Al-Ittihad stole the three points at the death as Bergwijn cut inside before curling a right-footed effort into the far-left corner.

The result moved Al-Ittihad three points clear at the summit, though Al-Hilal can go level with them with a win over Al-Raed on Saturday. Al-Nassr, meanwhile, stayed in fourth.

Data Debrief: Bergwijn bursts Ronaldo's bubble

Al-Ittihad have often been second best in their encounters with Al-Nassr, but they earned an impressive victory against Ronaldo's side, though it may not have been deserved.

They managed an expected goals (xG) total of just 0.66 from their 11 shots compared to Al-Nassr's 1.2 from the same number of attempts.

Benzema also ended his goal drought against Al-Nassr, having failed to score against them in his previous game against them. The former Madrid striker ended the game with a team-high xG of 0.36, while also having more shots (seven) and touches in the opposition box (four) than any of his team-mates.

Al-Ittihad have now won their last nine league matches, their second-longest streak in the competition after 10 wins between October 2021 and February 2022, while also triumphing in their eighth-straight home match in the Pro League.

  • 'I saw us losing': Coach Michel hails Girona's fighting spirit against Villarreal 'I saw us losing': Coach Michel hails Girona's fighting spirit against Villarreal

Michel was delighted with the mentality shown by his Girona team after they fought back to draw 2-2 with Villareal.

Girona were heading for defeat when Alex Baena put Villarreal 2-0 up early in the second half.

Yet Donny van de Beek dragged Girona back into it before Ladislav Krejci's superb volley deep into added time salvaged a point at Estadio de la Ceramica.

"At 2-0 it was very difficult to draw the game. I don't know if it was deserved but for me it was a great game from both teams," a relieved Michel said.

"[Villarreal coach] Marcelino controlled the tactical aspects and managed to make sure that with just a few touches the opponent hurt us in transition.

"I saw us losing, of course. They have a lot of quality and I thought that it was difficult to get something positive from the game. At 2-0 the team tried, we made it 2-1 and then we got into the game."

The result moved Girona up to seventh in the standings but they have work to do to return to the top four, with Villarreal in fourth place, four points ahead and with a game in hand.

"It will be complicated. Villarreal have found the key and with three competitions I don't know if we can reach that level," Michel said.

"They are not far away now with the draw, but they have a game in hand."

Ladislav Krejci's stoppage-time volley rescued a point for Girona in their 2-2 draw with Villarreal.

Though their three-match winning streak in LaLiga ended, Michel's side recovered from 2-0 down to earn a share of the spoils at Estadio de la Ceramica.

Villarreal were unbeaten in five matches across all competitions, and broke the deadlock midway through the first half when Thierno Barry tucked home after Yeremy Pino's initial header came back off the post.

The hosts, who were aiming to close the gap on the top three, doubled their lead within a minute of the restart through Alex Baena.

Girona responded in the 66th minute, halving the deficit when Donny van de Beek's deflected half-volley beat Diego Conde from the edge of the box.

Christhian Stuani saw an equaliser ruled out by VAR for offside, but the visitors did ensure a share of the spoils deep into stoppage time through Krejci's volley from distance.

Data Debrief: Barry joins Yamal in exclusive group

At 2-0 up, Villarreal were on course for their seventh victory over Girona in eight meetings.

Barry broke the deadlock and became the third player born in 2002 or later to be involved in six or more goals (four goals, two assists) in LaLiga this season, after Lamine Yamal and Fabio Silva.

However, Girona fought back, and though they could not extend their winning streak, the visitors maintained their momentum by earning a point.
