Hakimi wants Mbappe to extend PSG stay but will respect any decision

By Sports Desk April 17, 2022

Paris Saint-Germain's Achraf Hakimi hailed team-mate Kylian Mbappe as "one of the best in the world" and hopes the forward will stay at the club.

However, the Morocco international said he will support Mbappe in whatever decision he makes at the end of the season, with the striker's contract set to expire in June.

Across all competitions, Mbappe has recorded 31 goals and 18 assists – both club-highs – in 39 appearances this season as PSG close on the Ligue 1 title.

The club suffered a disappointing Champions League exit to Real Madrid last month, however, furthering speculation that Mbappe could swap Paris for Los Blancos when his deal expires.

Hakimi is desperate to see Mbappe extend his five-year stay in the French capital.

"Mbappe is one of the best in the world and he is my friend," Hakimi told Telefoot.

"I want him to stay here, he knows. He will decide what he thinks is best for his career, and I will support him."

Holding a 12-point lead at the top of Ligue 1, PSG can take a huge step towards claiming an eighth league title in 10 years when they face second-placed Marseille in Sunday's Classique, and Hakimi highlighted the importance of winning that clash to appease the club's disgruntled fans.

Indeed, despite PSG's last 11 Ligue 1 goals being scored by the brilliant attacking trio of Mbappe, Lionel Messi, and Neymar, the latter duo have faced jeers from their own supporters since the Parisians' 3-2 aggregate defeat to Madrid.

"I know there is a particular expectation and a lot of rivalry [between PSG and Marseille]," Hakimi added. "I experienced it the first time at the Velodrome [a 0-0 draw in October]. It is a game that can decide the fate of the championship.

"Our fans deserve this victory and this tenth league title [in the club's history]. We have had a very bad few weeks.

"It's hard when your fans don't support you. Winning against Marseille is the best we can do to keep them cheering us on until the end of the season."

Over a month has passed since the team's Champions League collapse at the Santiago Bernabeu, where a Karim Benzema hat-trick eliminated PSG after Mbappe had netted once in either leg, but Hakimi says he still cannot explain their European exit.

"It is difficult to realise that we are out of the Champions League," he added. "We had the mechanisms to get ahead. The truth is that I cannot explain it. Even today, when I think about it, I don't understand it. I understand that the fans are sad, so are we.

"At this level, small details make the difference, we have to correct them next year. That's what will make us champions."

PSG enter Sunday's crucial clash with Marseille having lost just one of their last 19 Ligue 1 meetings with their rivals, recording 14 wins during that run and keeping clean sheets in five of the previous seven.

Luton’s Premier League survival hopes were dealt an enormous blow after they suffered a 5-1 home defeat to Brentford, which virtually guaranteed the visitors of a fourth consecutive season in the top flight.

The 18th-placed Hatters could have moved out of the relegation zone with a win, but were undone by a slick attacking display from the Bees led by Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo.

With Ivan Toney not involved due to his ongoing hip issue, Thomas Frank watched his fluid front four run riot at Kenilworth Road with Wissa on target twice in the first half to reach 10 goals for the campaign.

Ethan Pinnock made the points safe with a third in the 62nd minute before Keane Lewis-Potter claimed a deserved goal two minutes later.

The brilliant Mbeumo had a hand in Brentford’s fifth when Kevin Schade fired home after 86 minutes and despite a stoppage-time consolation for Luke Berry, the afternoon belonged to Brentford after they moved on to 35 points – 10 above Rob Edwards’ strugglers with four matches left.

Luton were boosted before kick-off with Gabriel Osho and Albert Sambi Lokonga surprisingly declared fit and a raucous atmosphere greeted the players, but it was the visitors who started the strongest.

The fit-again Pinnock headed wide before Lewis-Potter squandered a golden opportunity when he fired into the side-netting after being played through by Mikkel Damsgaard.

While the Hatters responded with Alfie Doughty able to test Mark Flekken, Brentford continued to create chances and Thomas Kaminski produced a fine save to thwart Lewis-Potter’s 19th-minute header after an excellent Sergio Reguilon cross.

It felt only a matter of time before the Bees’ attacking quartet punished the home team and it duly arrived with 24 minutes played.

A crucial interception by Kristoffer Ajer found Mbeumo in space and he touched on for Wissa, who rifled beyond Kaminski from 20 yards for a superb opener.

Luton almost equalised immediately when Jordan Clark played through to Tahith Chong, but he smashed over before they suffered another setback when Issa Kabore went off with an ankle injury.

Brentford continued to threaten and only a block by Teden Mengi denied Lewis-Potter after a dangerous run before a sumptuous curled effort by Mbeumo smashed against the crossbar.

Yet Luton’s luck did run out in first-half stoppage-time as Mbeumo dribbled into the area and his cross rolled into the path of Wissa, who scuffed home.

Edwards reacted by bringing on Berry, but Brentford’s attacking prowess remained the difference and Kaminski had to be alert to save Damsgaard’s low strike before the hour mark.

A third goal came soon after when Pinnock powered in a header from Reguilon’s corner, which sparked ‘we are staying up’ chants by the away fans.

Two minutes later they had a fourth to celebrate after Damsgaard’s lofted pass found Mbeumo, who knocked on for Lewis-Potter to head home at the back post.

Mbeumo had been superb and he was again involved in Brentford’s fifth after his defence-splitting pass found Vitaly Janelt, who set up Schade for a simple tap-in.

Luton did have the final say as Berry latched onto a mistake to round Flekken and make it 5-1 in the second minute of added time, but their hopes of beating the drop look even slimmer now despite being applauded off by the home fans at full-time.

  • Relegated Forest Green end away campaign on high with Morecambe comeback win Relegated Forest Green end away campaign on high with Morecambe comeback win

Relegated Forest Green ended their away season on a high note with a 2-1 League Two comeback victory over Morecambe at the Mazuma Stadium.

First-half goals from Charlie McCann and Kyle McAllister gave Steve Cotterill’s side a 10th league win of the season as Morecambe fell to an eighth defeat in 10 games.

The home side were gifted the opener after 30 minutes as Rovers goalkeeper Vicente Reyes failed to control a Jordan Moore-Taylor back pass and gave Charlie Brown the chance to slide in and put the ball into the back of the net from close range.

Cotterill’s side bounced back quickly and levelled seven minutes later with an excellent goal. McAllister cut in from the right and threaded a ball through to McCann, who calmly stroked the ball past Archie Mair from eight yards out.

The goal gave the visitors a lift and they took the lead just before half-time with another well-worked goal.

The lively McAllister was played in after a neat exchange of passes and squeezed his shot past Mair’s left hand from just inside the box.

Both teams traded chances at the start of the second half with Emmanuel Osadebe denied by David Tutonda’s superb block at one end and Gwion Edwards foiled by a superb low save from Reyes at the other.

Christian Doidge and McAllister wasted glorious chances to add to Forest Green’s scoreline in the final moments but the win was secured.

  • Harrogate’s play-off hopes over after losing to MK Dons in eight-goal thriller Harrogate’s play-off hopes over after losing to MK Dons in eight-goal thriller

MK Dons extinguished Harrogate’s League Two play-off hopes with an enthralling 5-3 triumph at the EnviroVent Stadium.

The visitors, who went into the game with a top-seven spot already guaranteed, did not take their foot off the gas as goals from Alex Gilbey, Max Dean, Stephen Wearne, Emre Tezgel and Ellis Harrison secured maximum points.

In a thrilling end-to-end encounter, George Thomson (2) and Abraham Odoh netted for the hosts, who also hit the frame of the goal five times.

Harrogate forged ahead in the 33rd minute when Odoh converted the rebound after Matty Daly’s effort hit a post but MK Dons turned the tables with two goals in three minutes.

First, Gilbey levelled after receiving a return pass from Dean, who then grabbed his sixth goal in five games from close range.

Thomson made it 2-2 in first-half stoppage time with a superb 25-yard free-kick and Harrogate were back in front five minutes after the break when Thomson got on the end of Odoh’s left-wing cross from six yards for his 18th goal of the season.

MK Dons were back level two minutes later when a long ball forward by Michael Kelly opened up the home defence far too easily and Wearne ran through to beat an exposed James Belshaw.

The Sulphurites went on to throw the kitchen sink at the visitors in their search for a winner with Daly hitting uprights on two more occasions and Thomson thudding an effort against the bar.

But Tezgel made it 4-3 in the 80th minute, collecting Dan Kemp’s pull-back from the right byline before shifting the ball on to his left foot and beating Belshaw from six yards.

Two minutes later, Harrison then added a fifth, firing in from eight yards after the home side had failed to clear their lines, and there was still time for Thomson to strike another upright.
