Everton manager Frank Lampard has called for his players to answer Jamie Carragher's criticism on the pitch when they host Newcastle on Thursday.
The Toffees fell to a 15th defeat in 19 Premier League games with a 1-0 defeat to Wolves at home last Sunday, leaving them level on points with 18th-placed Watford, who have played three games more.
Speaking on Sky's Monday Night Football, Carragher subsequently labelled Everton players a "disgrace", and branded the Newcastle clash at Goodison Park the club's biggest fixture in over 20 years.
Lampard may have lost just one of his last 11 top-flight home games against English managers, but Everton have been defeated in 16 of their 26 Premier League games this season – the Toffees last lost more in a single campaign in 2003-04 (17).
However, he believes his team will bounce back on the pitch against Newcastle, who saw their nine-game unbeaten league run end in a 1-0 defeat at Chelsea last time out.
"It's the players' job to answer that on the pitch," Lampard said of Carragher's comments at Wednesday's pre-match news conference.
"The Wolves game wasn't a disgrace, but I understand the analysis because you look at the Tottenham game and on a footballing level, I didn't like the game at all. I wouldn't use that language but I didn't like the game at all.
"But we have to accept that people have opinions, people who care and do their jobs in the media, in many ways, not just Jamie, but the players have to answer it on the pitch, it's the only way.
"You'll be in these positions in relative ways so many times in your career, you have to get together – the players individually, collectively, myself of course, and answer it on the pitch."
One concern for Everton is that Newcastle have won each of their last three league fixtures against the Toffees, including a 3-1 victory in the reverse fixture, and Lampard knows the size of the task at hand.
"It's not time for lies or to change the story, we know where we're at," he continued. "We've also seen that this club have stayed up in the league on the last day a couple of times [in 1994 and 1998] so it's not absolutely new.
"Maybe that's why the nerves creep in with the players and the fans, that's human nature, but for us it's not about having fear of what might be. It's what can we action, we deal with these 12 games in front of us.
"You look at Newcastle, since Eddie Howe went in there and made great progress but the first games [he only won one game out of first 10], what needed to change, things take time.
"I'm not talking about seasons and seasons, that's a different kind of thing, about building an idea at a club.
"In terms of changing a club in a difficult position, they take a bit of time and I think Newcastle used January to their credit, financially they were in a position to add well in personnel. We're not in that position, we can only focus on ourselves."
PSG close in on Ligue 1 title with 4-1 win at Lorient
Paris Saint-Germain closed in on a record-extending 12th Ligue 1 title as Ousmane Dembele and Kylian Mbappe each scored twice in a 4-1 away victory against second-from-bottom Lorient on Wednesday.

The capital side went ahead on 19 minutes as Dembele beat two defenders before slotting the ball past Yvon Mvogo from just inside the box.
Three minutes later, Mbappe connected with a Nuno Mendes cross to double the advantage.
Dembele then put the result beyond doubt on the hour mark when he tapped in from Mbappe's cross.
Mohamed Bamba reduced the arrears in the 73rd minute, but it was too little, too late for a team with 26 points from 30 games.
Mbappe added another one in the last minute with a right-footed effort to take his season tally in the top flight to 26.

Asked how he feels going into the final few games of the season with so much on the line, Guardiola said: “Every game is adrenalin. Every game is important. But yes it’s decisive. Every mistake or every step back makes it more difficult. It is what it is.
“We have been here in the last years fortunately many times so that’s why we know what we are playing for.”
Guardiola was also questioned about the criticism levelled at match officials after Nottingham Forest’s strongly worded statement following their 2-0 defeat at Everton on Sunday.
"Absolutely disagree. In every league in the world, this kind of thing will happen more and more, but of course, I never had doubts about that,” said Guardiola.
"They make a mistake, they feel bad. It's normal. When they do the job, they want to do it well. The game is so difficult, it is fast and quick, decisions have to be made in one instant. It's not easy.”
Liverpool line up Feyenoord coach Slot as Klopp replacement
Arne Slot appears to be at the front of the queue to replace Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager.
Klopp confirmed in January that he would be leaving the Reds at the end of the season.
Xabi Alonso, who has led Bayer Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title, was swiftly established as a leading candidate to take the helm at Anfield, where he starred as a player for the Reds between 2004 and 2009.
The 42-year-old, however, is staying put in Germany, and Liverpool's search for Klopp's successor has taken them to Feyenoord's door.
Slot has been previously linked to jobs in the Premier League. Leeds United wanted to appoint him last season before their relegation to the Championship, while he was targeted by Tottenham before they appointed Ange Postecoglou.
The Dutchman intimated when linked with Spurs: "A normal next step would be to go abroad and I've always said that the best league in the world is the Premier League."
Ideally, Liverpool will be aiming for a coach who can come close to replicating Klopp's style of play, and in particular has a flair for working with and developing young players.
Slot has enjoyed fantastic success in Rotterdam. He became Feyenoord head coach in December 2022, after leaving AZ, and went on to win the Eredivisie title in 2022-23, having reached the Europa League final in the previous season.
The 45-year-old has a 64.4 per cent win record from 146 games in charge, winning 94, drawing 29 and losing just 23.
His Feyenoord team have scored 329 goals, an average of 2.2 per match, conceding 147 in return. Slot's points per game is a hugely impressive 2.13.
Feyenoord are, though, set to relinquish their Eredivisie crown, as they trail leaders PSV by nine points. They have, however, won the KNVB Cup this term.
As there is no break clause in the Dutchman's contract, it has been reported that a compensation fee in the region of €10million (£8.5m) could prise him away from Feyenoord.
Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim is another coach who has been heavily linked with the Liverpool job, albeit he is reportedly in talks with West Ham.
