Inter 0-2 Bayern Munich: Superb Sane gets Bundesliga champions up and running

By Sports Desk September 07, 2022

Bayern Munich defeated Inter 2-0 at San Siro in their Champions League opener thanks to a first-half strike from Leroy Sane and Danilo D'Ambrosio's own goal.

The visitors dominated the opening stages and deservedly went ahead through Sane when he brilliantly brought down a Joshua Kimmich long ball, before rounding Andre Onana and drilling home.

Julian Nagelsmann's side came under increasing Inter pressure in the second half, but D'Ambrosio's awkward attempt at a block from a Sane shot killed the game off and earned Bayern all three points.

Bayern have now won their last 19 Champions League openers, as the Bundesliga titans paved the way for what they hope will be qualification from a tough Group C.

Hansi Flick demanded Barcelona show their quality on a more consistent basis after they stumbled to a 2-2 draw at Real Betis, leaving them vulnerable at the top of LaLiga.

Barca twice took the lead at the Benito Villamarin Stadium via goals from Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, but Betis fought back through Giovani Lo Celso and substitute Assane Diao to earn a share of the points.

After the draw, Flick's side have 38 points from 17 matches but second-placed rivals Real Madrid, who have 33, can move past them if they are able to win their two games in hand.

"It wasn't a good game. We are a young team and we need to improve a lot," Flick told reporters.

"We must be stronger, especially when we play away. We have quality, but we have to show it in every game. We could have played better.

"But we've been slow in passing, with a lot of long balls... it's not what we want and not our strength. We have to focus on our strengths and what we have to do."

Flick was shown a red card in the second half for protesting after Betis were awarded a penalty, with the VAR stepping in to punish Frenkie De Jong's tackle on Vitor Roque.

The former Bayern boss believes he did nothing wrong but said he is not planning on appealing the red card.

"Marcus [Sorg], my assistant, did a good job. We scored a goal with him on the sidelines," Flick said.

"I didn't say anything to anyone, it was just my reaction. It took a long time to decide if it was a penalty or not.

"If you need so much time, it can be a doubt. I don't agree with my sending off. It has never happened to me before. I got angry at myself, not at anyone else."

  • Rodgers hails Celtic character as Hibs win makes it 30 unbeaten Rodgers hails Celtic character as Hibs win makes it 30 unbeaten

Brendan Rodgers credited Celtic's togetherness after their 3-0 victory over Scottish Premiership strugglers Hibernian made it 30 domestic games unbeaten.

Hibs dropped back to the bottom of the table after passing up a host of presentable opportunities in Glasgow, with Kasper Schmeichel making several saves in the Celtic goal.

Arne Engels had put Celtic ahead in the sixth minute, with a Joe Newell own goal and a Kyogo Furuhashi strike making the points safe after half-time.

Celtic have not lost a domestic game since a 2-0 defeat to Hearts in early March, and they now hold a nine-point advantage over Aberdeen – who they beat 1-0 on Wednesday – at the top of the table.

Celtic gave up 14 shots worth 2.19 expected goals (xG), while attempting 21 worth 3.89 xG in an open game on Saturday, with Rodgers subsequently acknowledging they were not at their best, particularly in defence.

"It was a great, great win for us on the back of a tough game in midweek," Rodgers said. "You can see where Hibs' confidence has improved and they had chances.

"We were nowhere near the level of our defending, even though we've kept a clean sheet and that's a huge testament to Kasper because we haven't given away much at all this season.

"Today we were just slightly off it and that gave them opportunities to score but, overall, I think to get the win and to keep winning really shows you the mental toughness and the character within the team."

  • Juventus 2-2 Bologna: Mbangula keeps hosts unbeaten with last-gasp goal Juventus 2-2 Bologna: Mbangula keeps hosts unbeaten with last-gasp goal

Juventus came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Bologna and maintain their unbeaten start to the season in Serie A, as Samuel Mbangula's stoppage-time goal ensured they drew for the ninth time this campaign.

Juventus had been staring at a first league defeat under Thiago Motta, having entered the final half-hour 2-0 down to their in-form visitors.

Dan Ndoye gave Bologna a deserved lead on the half-hour mark and they doubled their advantage seven minutes into the second half through Tommaso Pobega.

Teun Koopmeiners pulled one back for Juventus 10 minutes later and, with time running out, Mbangula struck from outside the area to snatch a last-gasp draw for the hosts.

Though they remain the only unbeaten side in the Italian top flight this campaign, Juve sit sixth with 27 points from 15 games, their nine draws keeping them seven adrift of leaders Atalanta.

Bologna, meanwhile, are still eighth but have moved level on 22 points with AC Milan, having played one game fewer than the Bianconeri.

Data Debrief: The kids are alright for Juve

Juventus' fans may have been frustrated by watching their side play out yet another stalemate in Turin, but things could have been far worse if not for Mbangula.

The Belgian forward wrapped his foot around Dusan Vlahovic's pass on the edge of the area, bending a cultured finish beyond the reach of visiting goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski in the second minute of stoppage time.

In Mbangula (who was born in 2004 and has two goals) and Kenan Yildiz (2005, three goals), Juve are the only team in Serie A to have multiple players born in 2004 or later with at least two goals this season.
