After registering his second Diamond League win of the season, long jumper Wayne Pinnock expressed deep gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose as he confirmed his switch of national allegiance from Jamaica to Türkiye.
Fresh off a narrow win in the men’s long jump at the Diamond League meet inside London’s Olympic Stadium on Saturday, Pinnock revealed that he is now fully committed to seizing every opportunity that comes with the change. Pinnock finished tops with a leap of 8.20m, ahead of Greek Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou (8.19m), while Jamaica's Carey McLeod sealed third place with 8.10m.
"The main preparation is really for the Olympics because getting an Olympic medal means a lot. So it (switching to Turkey) is an exciting opportunity for me, and I decided to take it. I view it as probably God showing me a way out, so I am just trusting in Him, trusting myself, and just having faith," Pinnock said shortly after his win.
The 24-year-old, who has earned silver medals at the World Championships, Olympic Games, and World Indoors, admitted that the decision followed a challenging season, but his motivation to stay at the top of his game remains intact.
"It has been a really tough season for me, but I have just been praying. I came out here today with a focused mindset on executing, and that is exactly what I did, so I just have to thank God for that. We know what winning feels like, so it was just about staying calm and focused on executing. There is no stress, and we have been preparing for this, so I just came out here to compete as best as I can," he shared.
Pinnock is one of four Jamaican athletes who made the move to compete for Türkiye earlier this year, as triple jump prodigy Jaydon Hibbert and throwers Roje Stona and Rajindra Campbell also made the switch.
