Olympic champion Masai Russell lit up the track in spectacular fashion to open the Miami leg of the Grand Slam Track series on Friday, storming to a world-leading 12.17 seconds to win the Women’s Short Hurdles—becoming the second-fastest woman in history.
Russell exploded from the blocks and fended off a fierce challenge from compatriot Tia Jones, who ran a lifetime best 12.19 for second. Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent, now more than a year into her professional career after completing her NCAA stint in 2023, was third in 12.34.
Former world record holder Kendra Harrison, whose personal best stands at 12.20, finished fourth in 12.40, while Olympic bronze medallist Megan Tapper of Jamaica clocked 12.50 for fifth.
Russell’s blazing time - a new American record - places her just 0.05 off the world record of 12.12, set by Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, in 2022. The performance confirms Russell’s red-hot form and positions her as the clear favourite as the 2025 season heats up.
The Miami meet continues through the weekend with a stacked lineup across multiple disciplines, promising more electrifying performances.
