Jamaican Olympic 100m silver medallist Kishane Thompson has declared his readiness for the 100m at Saturday’s Prefontaine Classic at the Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Fresh off picking up his second National 100m title last week at the National Stadium in Kingston, the 23-year-old will be competing at the Diamond League meet for the second time.
His first Prefontaine Classic was back in 2023 when he ran 9.87 for fourth.
This time around, Thompson enters Saturday’s race on the back of a personal best and world leading 9.75.
“It’s a good feeling. For me, it’s always just to go out there and enjoy myself in a high-level competition and just try to consistently improve,” Thompson stated at Friday’s pre-meet press conference.
With the 100m final at the JAAA/Puma National Senior Championships happening just a week ago, Thompson was asked about how he feels physically going into Saturday’s race.
“It’s pretty much the same. I’m not feeling tired or feeling any discomfort. I’m ready,” he said.
The meet record at the Prefontaine Classic was set back in 2011 by another Jamaican, Steve Mullings, when he ran 9.80.
“Anything is possible,” was the MVP Track Club star’s response about the possibility of seeing another sub-9.8 time on Saturday.
“I won’t jinx it for the bad of the good. I just have to come out there, execute and do my best,” Thompson added.
2019 World champion Christian Coleman, fellow Jamaican Ackeem Blake, Trayvon Bromell, Jeremiah Azu, Brandon Hicklin, Zharnel Hughes, Lachlan Kennedy and Bayanda Walaza complete Saturday’s line-up for what is sure to be a race that excites fans both at Hayward Field and watching around the world.
