WPCL: Hodge scores ton as Volcanoes take control against Red Force
Kavem Hodge converted his overnight 87 into a splendid 128 as Windwards Volcanoes took control of their Digicel Regional 4-Day match against the T&T Red Force in Grenada on Friday.
Resuming on 270 for 4, the Volcanoes almost threw away their overnight advantage when Kyle Mayers, unbeaten on 73 overnight only added one to his overnight score before he was dismissed by Daniel St. Clair who picked up his fourth wicket, that of Dennis Smith, with his next delivery.
270 for 4 suddenly became 272 for 6 and the Volcanoes had seemingly lost their overnight advantage. Enter Shane Shillingford, who together with Hodge put on a valuable 53 for the seventh wicket, pushing the Volcanoes past 300.
Hodge was finally dismissed for 128, becoming St. Clair’s fifth victim but by then the score was 362 for 9 and the home side had restored some respectability to the score.
St. Clair then dismissed Sherman Lewis to end with figures of 6 for 61 as the Volcanoes’ innings closed at 366. It was St. Clair’s maiden five-wicket haul in first-class cricket.
The Red Force were then floored by a two-wicket burst from left-arm seamer Delorn Johnson, as they staggered to the close.
Left-handed Amir Jangoo stroked 24 but was one of two wickets to fall in the space of 17 balls towards the end of play with the visitors precariously perched on 51 for 4.
