Mattocks targets deep run for Timbers in MLS playoffs
Jamaica international Darren Mattocks says the Portland Timbers will be looking for a strong finish to the Major League Soccer (MLS) regular season as the team targets a deep run in the playoffs.
With the two games to go in the regular season the Timbers, who are on 47 points, are currently in third place in the Western Conference standings, but could still claim top spot with favourable results. Vancouver currently top the standings on 51 points with Sporting Kansas in second place on 48. The Timbers remaining fixture will see the team host games against DC United and finish out its fixtures against Vancouver.
With the Timbers having lost a mere two games at home all season and unbeaten in the last six Mattocks believes the matches present the perfect opportunity to take momentum going into the playoffs.
“It’s all about momentum we’ve been doing really well for the last seven or eight games. So we are looking to finish strong for the last two home games and I think that gives us a very good chance to get home field advantage, which is massive in this league,” Mattocks said.
“We’ve won our last six at home if I’m not mistaken, so to get these last couple of three points from these games is massive and that will put us in the position to make a deep run in the playoffs and that has been our focus from the get go.”
