England quick Curran wary of 'X-factor' Gayle

England fast bowler Tom Curran is anticipating a fierce contest between himself and West Indies star batsman Chris Gayle as the teams prepare to face off in a five-match One Day International (ODI) series later this month.

Gayle only recently returned to the West Indies squad following a long absence, as regulations previously enforced by the sport’s regional governing board Cricket West Indies (CWI) had left the team’s senior player ineligible to represent the region.  He is, however, expected to make a big impact as the team pushes for unlikely automatic qualification to the 2019 World Cup.

Curran, who dismissed Gayle a few seasons ago in the NatWest T20 blasts hopes for similar results in the upcoming series and knows the scalp of the 37-year-old destroyer, who he describes as the best T20 batsman ever, is still a prized one.

“There’s loads of batsmen who when you get out you realise it’s a big wicket but he’s right up there,” Curran told BBC Sport.

“He’s the greatest T20 batsman ever so regardless of his age he still clears the ropes with ease and has that X-factor,” he added.

The bowler managed to dismiss the big-left hander with a delivery that bounced short the last time around and hinted that the plan could be the same.

“I luckily enough got him out with a short ball when we played against Somerset a few years ago so that might be the plan.”
