England hopeful Burns letting runs do the talking

By Sports Desk September 13, 2018

Rory Burns is waiting for the phone call from the England selectors after leading to Surrey to County Championship glory.

A three-wicket win at Worcestershire on Thursday was Surrey's ninth consecutive four-day win and sealed a first Championships title since 2002.

Captain and opener Burns has been integral to that triumph and a second-innings 66 at New Road followed his fourth hundred of the season first time around.

The 28-year-old has now passed 1,000 first-class runs in each of the past five seasons – returns that are sure to be in the thoughts of national selector Ed Smith, considering Alastair Cook's retirement from Test cricket and Keaton Jennings' ongoing struggles at the top of the order.

"I'm always hopeful, I hope my phone rings and I hope I get that call. Hopefully I take an opportunity if it comes knocking," Burns told ESPNcricinfo.

"But I like to let my bat do the talking. It's not really my way to put my hand up and talk about it. I'll try and score my runs and see where I get to."

Burns has not heard from England since captaining the Lions in their win over India A in July, when he scored five and 38 opening alongside Cook on debut.

"I think that's international cricket, I think that's the setup and how it is," he added.

"You wait your turn and try and make it so you can't not be picked."

Stand-in Windies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite has insisted the squad is ready for the challenge of playing against Bangladesh at home when the series between the teams bowls off on Wednesday.

On their previous tour, the Windies struggled to gain a foothold in two difficult Tests against India where they were easily defeated by an innings and 272 runs and then 10 wickets.

They can, however, claim motivation from a partly competitive One Day International series and a strong showing in the two-day practice match

‘I think the preparation is quite good,’ Brathwaite told reporters in Chattogram after the drawn two-day practice game.

“Obviously probably prefer a three-day game for tours unlike this and we have come from India also and that for I think it was very good preparations for us before the first Test,” he added.
“There will few challenges. We have to expect that. We are up for the challenge. It won’t be so easy. Obviously, they are very good at home. But we are ready for the challenges.”

Sri Lanka have added Nishan Peiris to their squad for the third and final Test against England after Akila Dananjaya was reported for a suspect bowling action.

Spinner Dananjaya took eight wickets in the second Test after being given 14 days to respond to the charge but is set to be assessed at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane on Friday.

The third Test gets under way in Colombo on Friday, with 21-year-old Peiris - previously a member of Sri Lanka's Under-19 and 'A' sides - included despite only having 12 first-class matches under his belt.

Sri Lanka will hope his lack of experience is not an issue and that he can transfer some promising early form to the senior international stage, having taken 38 wickets at 29.52, including two five-wicket hauls.

England have already won the series following victories in Galle and Pallekele.
