Dacres, NACAC Athlete of the Year, let down by IAAF snub

By November 06, 2018

Jamaica’s national discus champion and record holder Fedrick Dacres said he was proud to have been named the NACAC Male Athlete of the Year but disappointed that he was not selected for the IAAF Athlete of the Year.

Dacres, 24, the 2011 World U18 and 2012 discus WorldU20 champion, enjoyed his most successful season as a senior in 2018. In addition to being the national champion, Dacres won the Commonwealth, NACAC and Diamond League titles. He also won the season-ending Continental Cup title in Ostrava.

He also held the world’s best throw of 69.67m from June 10 until August 26 when Daniel Stahl of Sweden threw 69.72m to deny Dacres the honour of ending the season with the best throw in the world for 2018.

Notwithstanding that blip on his resume, Dacres felt the award was deserved.

“It’s truly an honour to be the NACAC Athlete of the Year. It’s a great feeling. I think I worked hard to accomplish all that I could this year,” he told SportsMax.TV.

However, for all he managed to accomplish in 2018, Dacres was bemused that he was overlooked for the IAAF Male Athlete of the Year Awards.

“I don’t know. For me not to be among the nominees for the (IAAF) Athlete of the Year, there is nothing more I could do. It’s not up to me, it’s up to whoever selected, so there is nothing I could do,” he said.

“I feel a bit disappointed because I thought I would have been of it, but it is life.”

Dacres ended his standout season by also being named the 2018 University of the West Indies, Vice Chancellor's Male Athlete of the Year.
